Work has begun to appoint the first roles to an exciting £4.8m scheme that will create a centre of excellence in research into local health-related issues affecting people in north and west Cumbria. 

Vice Chancellor Professor Julie Mennell DL has welcomed new Carlisle United owners Tom and Patty Piatak to University of Cumbria’s Fusehill Street campus, which is situated less than a mile from the League One club’s Brunton Park ground.

A dynamic two-day event focusing on the contribution of the arts and creative sectors to health and wellbeing in Cumbria has been taking place this week, co-hosted by University of Cumbria with Arts Council England, Cumberland Council and Westmorland and Furness Council.

The creation of Cumbria’s first medical school, a partnership between University of Cumbria and Imperial College London, has taken another step forward with £5 million in philanthropic support from Pears Foundation.

The NHS is facing a staffing crisis.  The British Medical Association estimates that the current shortfall is over 50,000 doctors.  The shortage in the number of doctors is unevenly spread across the UK, mirroring the distribution of social deprivation and health inequality, with the North of England particularly affected – 11 per cent of NHS posts are vacant compared to 3 per cent in London.

The University of Cumbria and Imperial College London are working together to launch a new graduate entry medical school in Carlisle.
