Cumbria’s New Medical School Is Calling Future Doctors to Make a Difference
Time is running out for aspiring doctors to apply to one of the UK’s innovative new medical programmes. Applications for the Graduate Entry Programme at the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine (PCSM) close on 15 October 2025 at 18:00 BST—and for many students, this is more than just a deadline. It’s a chance to be part of a movement to transform healthcare in one of the country’s most underserved regions.
A collaboration between Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria, PCSM is based in Carlisle and offers a four-year MBBS programme tailored to train doctors in Cumbria, for Cumbria. Students will gain real-world experience through placements across the county and a bespoke curriculum to support the region’s healthcare needs.
“We’re not just studying medicine—we’re changing lives.”
Student Anthonia, who is part of the first cohort said she was drawn to the programme’s community focus:
“I’ve worked in rural areas and local communities, and this opportunity aligned perfectly with my vision. I want to learn from patients, clinicians, and the community itself. It’s about building trust and making people feel seen.”
She was shocked by the region’s health statistics:
“Cumbria is one of four places in the UK with below-average life expectancy. We have the chance to change that—to leave a legacy and bring people together, especially in isolated areas.”
Local students, local impact
Rina, born in Barrow-in-Furness, sees the programme as a way to improve continuity of care:
“People want to build relationships with their doctors, especially when dealing with chronic illnesses. They want someone who knows their story from the start.”
Patrick, who has lived and worked in Cumbria for over a year, added:
“I’ve seen the gaps in trauma care, imaging, and even basic hospital access. Studying here feels like I’m giving back to the community I’ve come to care about.”
A Vision for the Region
Professor Mary Morrell, Head of PCSM, shared the school’s mission:
“We aim to improve patient outcomes in Cumbria by training skilled, innovative doctors who will stay and serve the region. We welcome applicants from the North West or those with ties to the area.”
Graduates will earn their MBBS from Imperial College London—one of the world’s top medical schools—while studying in the heart of Cumbria.
Don’t miss your chance to be part of this pioneering programme.
